She team draws flak for violence
Hyderabad: Clarifying their stance on the beating up of an eve-teaser, a police official said that it was not their norm to indulge in violence.
“Our woman cop who was observing his obscene activities got angry after it exceeded the limits and beat him. And then other members followed.
Most of the times it is done only to encourage women to fight crimes against them. They should become confident and brave enough to speak out and say no to eve-teasing.
They should react instantly,” said an official from the Central Crime Station. However, there have been different responses to this incident. Additional Public Prosecutor S. Gopal Singh at the Nampally Criminal Courts said, “The main motive of cops should be to reform the accused.
They should focus on making the accused feel guilty of his acts and punishing him in public may help in bringing a change in him, but he shouldn't be punished just for the sake of it or for gaining popularity.”
Officials should see that women are able to fight against eve-teasing as She teams can’t be present everywhere, Mr Singh added.
Meanwhile, Thakur Rajkumar, a human rights activist, feels it’s not a good approach. “He is just an accused and not a convict. It’s for the judiciary to decide.
He shouldn’t be punished by cops or they shouldn’t allow the victims to punish the accused in public view,” he said.
