Hyderabad: The She teams that have been lauded for their efforts in curbing eve-teasing in the city, drew criticism recently for allegedly punishing an accused in public.
In an incident which occurred a couple of days ago, a 50-year-old man was beaten by She team members after he was held for allegedly making obscene gestures to women near Koti Women’s College.
As part of their routine, the She team members, in plain clothes, were stationed at the Koti bus stop when they saw the accused moving close to women at the bus stop and making obscene gestures towards them. The cops recorded the incident and nabbed him.
In a video footage available online, the cops are seen slapping and beating the accused in full public view. The women who were on the spot too came down heavily on him.
The police, however, said that this was not the norm and if it is done, it’s only to encourage victims to fight against eve-teasing. “Our woman cop who was observing his obscene activities got angry after it exceeded the limits,” said a police official.
