Pragathi Mahavidyala campus conundrum
Principal of Pragathi Mahavidyala insists that the college had everything in place
Hyderabad: The incident that led to the death of a 19-year-old student has rattled the management of Pragathi Mahavidyala. And the fact that it started with a senior harassing a girl student has lent a totally different dimension to the issue.
Insisting that the episode has been unjustly portraying the college in a bad light, principal T.V. Rao says, “We have been a co-ed college for 40 years. How could we run without having the machinery to deal with these issues that are bound to come up?”
Talking about the current issue, Rao adds, “We are so hurt by this. It would have been advisable for the girl to have come and report it to us, instead of Harsha (the victim) taking it to the level of an argument. I also request the media to take care when they speak of Suresh as if he is a murderer. From the details of the case, it looks as if it was unintentional on his part.”
“We have an active anti-ragging committee, which starts with orientation and counselling in the beginning of the year and continues to monitor and work through the year. We even have a cell for women empowerment that is run by our vice principal, Madhavilatha. This cell specifically works to bring to light any kind of harassment,” he says.
Rao adds that the college, as recently as November 21, had a ‘She’ initiative on eve-teasing. “We had police personnel also taking part in the programme wherein they met girl students and advised them to come forward and report harassment.”
The college also has an effective course of action in place. “While we deal with smaller cases by taking an undertaking from the erring student, serious cases are reported to parents and counselling is done. But smaller incidents don’t just mean we forgive and forget. We keep an eye on marked students, to check if they continue to show an inclination towards violence.”
