Chennai: A class 12 student assaulted a woman computer teacher at a government higher secondary school, near Maduravoyal, on Monday evening leaving her with a ruptured eardrum. The teacher had reprimanded him for switching off the computer without properly shutting it down.Around 3.30 pm on monday, the boy was attending practical classes in the Computer Lab when the incident happened.
The teacher in charge, Lakshmi (37), is said to have chided him for switching off the UPS system directly. The boy slapped the teacher repeatedly on her face in front of the students before other staff, who were alerted, came to the teacher’s aid.
Sources said the teacher scolded the boy as his act would damage the computers and would be bad for the students, especially with board exam practicals nearing. The teacher was moved to a private hospital in Koyambedu initially and later referred to Kilpauk medical college hospital for treatment.
According to hospital sources, the teacher has been advised to undergo a surgery in a couple of weeks as the eardrum in her left ear was ruptured. Though the city police are aware of the incident following a message from the hospital, no case has been registered so far. “We have not received any formal complaint. However, we have issued a community service register (CSR) to the teacher,” a senior police official said.
It was learnt that this is the second such incident involving the student. Last year, he had assaulted a male teacher and was later suspended. Following Monday’s incident, the school authorities are said to have forwarded a complaint to the Tiruvallur chief education officer, K. Chandrasekaran.
On Tuesday, Ponneri district education officials visited the school and held enquiries. According to school official, the staff council responsible for initiating disciplinary proceedings recommended issuing transfer certificate to the boy through an unanimous resolution as it was a second incident involving the boy.
