Bangalore Club liquor licence cancelled for violating Excise license conditions
Showcause notice was issued following an inspection by the Excise officials
Bengaluru: Bangalore Club, in the eye of a storm after a senior police officer accused it of bootlegging, may be unable to serve alcohol to their members for a month after the Deputy Commissioner (Urban) V. Shankar, who is also the licensing authority, suspended, the Excise license (CL4) -of the club for one month on Tuesday for breach of license.
“We have suspended the excise license of Bangalore Club for a month after they failed to reply to a showcause notice, which was issued on November 23 asking them to explain why action should not be taken against them for violating Excise license conditions. We had given them a week’s time but instead of responding to the notice they wanted a fortnight’s time, which was not possible under the Karnataka Excise Act,” said Mr. Shankar.
The showcause notice was issued following an inspection of the Club by the Excise officials on November 22. “We found the Club violating the license rules. Besides serving alcohol on multiple counters, they have even subleased the CL4 license to two private restaurants, which also operate inside the Club premises. The Club has been issued license to serve alcohol at ‘Men’s Bar’ and ‘Umbrella Bar’ but they were found serving liquor at multiple counters, including the lawns, which is illegal,” said an Excise officer on condition of anonymity.
Bangalore Club has recently been in the news following an alleged standoff between a senior IPS officer and the Club security guard, who reportedly refused to allow the officer’s vehicle inside the premises without the Club membership ID. The officer had later cited violations of Excise rules by the Club, which led to Excise inspection and subsequently a showcause notice to them by the DC (Urban).
