Varun goes from candy floss to grunge

For the first time the young actor, Varun Dhawan will be playing a father on screen

Mumbai: After playing the loverboy multiple times in his films, Varun Dhawan has taken a rather dark turn for his upcoming film Badlapur. For the first time the young actor will be playing a father on screen.

“All my previous characters have been an extension of Varun Dhawan. In Badlapur, I’m something that I could be when I become a father. These are emotions I haven’t experienced yet in real life. The scenes of Badlapur used to break me emotionally. In real life too I forgive, but I don’t forget. That’s one similarity I share with this character.”

There have also been comparisons between Shahid’s look in Haider and Varun’s in Badlapur. “But my look isn’t like Shahid’s. Haider was from Kashmir. I play a man from Maharashtra. My look has been created by Vikram dada, a National Award-winning artist. And my look is somewhat inspired by my brother Rohit Dhawan,” says the actor, who shot in Nasik jail. Recalling the experience he says, “We shot with murderers, rapists and for some reason Nawaz (Siddiqui) was very comfortable with them. He was like their gang leader.”

There was also some talk of Varun hitting Vinay Pathak, which led to the latter breaking a bone. “Yes, it was an intense scene and I missed the timing. I pushed him and he hit a bed. Hats off to him for returning from hospital and finishing his scene.”

Varun admits he also worked on modulating his voice, which sounds nothing like what we are used to hearing. “Yes, I moderated my voice. Sriram Raghavan heard different voices and picked one. Then our sound engineer helped me. I’ve used a bass voice even for jokes in the film that are sarcastic.”
