Income Tax case against Jayalalithaa to be closed
Chennai: AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa and N. Sasikala informed a city court on Monday that they had paid Rs 1.99 crore to the Income Tax department towards compounding fee in the 18-year-old case against them.
When the case by Income Tax Department for their failure to file returns for two consecutive years (1991-92 and 1992-93) relating to an erstwhile firm Sasi Enterprises came up for hearing before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court, (Economic Offences-I), Egmore, counsels informed the court that their clients had paid the compounding fee and were awaiting the final order.
The lawyers said the Regional Compounding Committee, in its meeting on November 26, had decided to accept the compounding application subject to remittance of compounding fee, establishment charges and litigation fees.
The next day, Sasi Enterprises paid Rs 75,33,330 (1991-1992) and Rs 65,67,872 (1992-1993), Sasikala paid Rs 28,07,972 and Jayalalithaa Rs 30,83,887 towards compounding application.
The Income Tax department is to pass final order relating to the compounding applications and hence they sought adjournment of the proceeding for two weeks. Special public prosecutor for Income Tax Department did not oppose the plea.
As the ACMM, R. Dakshinamoorthy was on leave, (outstation duty), the matter was referred to III Additional Court. After perusing the documents, judge A. Kayalvizhi posted the matter to December 11 for further hearing.
