HYDERABAD: A dog created mayhem at Shyamlal Building in Begumpet on Monday, almost chewing off the ear of a one and a half year old girl and biting the leg of a four year old boy.
K. Prasanna, who had her ear chewed off, is scheduled for surgery. R. Eshwar, 4, had to get 13 stitches. The incident took place around 3.30 pm on Monday.
The dog, a female, had killed two puppies littered by another dog and was rushing about madly, entering houses. After the biting incidents, residents of Tata Chary Colony, Begumpet, hit the dog with sticks and poisoned it on Monday night.
“The dog entered our compound and attacked Prasanna while she was playing outside our house. It caught her left ear and tried to rip it off.
The dog then went for her throat. It tried to attack us when we started pelting stones to drive it off,” said the toddler’s mother K. Manjula, a daily wage earner.
She said 90 per cent of Prasanna’s ear was damaged and she has deep scratches on her neck.
“In fact, her ear is hanging and needs to be stitched. Doctors have given Prasanna anti-rabies shots and she is under observation for the next 48 hours. The medical care has so far cost us Rs 50,000,” she said. “We are keeping a close watch on the baby for 48 hours,” said a doctor.
R. Narahari, Eshwar’s father, said, “I was on my bike and my son had just stepped off to go to a shop when the dog caught his leg. It threw my son down and if we had not intervened it would have killed my son.”
Eshwar was rushed to a hospital in Ameerpet and had to be given 13 stitches. He will be on medication for weeks and doctors say that he needs to be under constant observation, Mr Narahari said. “We have never seen this dog earlier in the locality,” he said.
Residents said the dog was on a mad run and also attacked a senior citizen in the lane next to Tata Chary Colony. Locals say due to the problems caused by dogs, they were forced to stay indoors.
