Cairo: At least two persons were killed and ten injured when police clashed with demonstrators protesting here to denounce dropping of murder charge against former ousted president Hosni Mubarak and his sons by an an Egyptian court.

Over 3,000 protesters took to the streets and gathered near iconic Tahrir Square on Saturday evening, after Mubarak was acquitted of a murder charge by a court which found him not guilty in the killing of hundreds of unarmed protesters during the 2011 revolution that toppled the former strongman's nearly three decades-long regime.

The protesters held country's flag and chanted slogans against the verdict.

Police closed Tahrir Square to prevent protesters from entering and fired water cannons, teargas and birdshot to disperse the crowd, media outlets reported.

Mubarak’s sons Alaa and Gamal are currently serving four-year prison terms for embezzlement of state funds. Mubarak himself is serving out a jail term for corruption in another case.

Mubarak may roam free soon
Egypt’s jailed ex-president Hosni Mubarak could be released early after having served two-thirds of a corruption sentence and seeing murder charges dropped.

Mubarak was expected to stay in jail on a three-year sentence in a separate graft case.

His lawyer, Farid al-Deeb, said Mubarak, 86, could benefit from early release from the military hospital where he is being held.

Mubarak “has served two-thirds of his sentence” when time held in preliminary detention is taken into account, Deeb said.
