Rains add to cold conditions in Chennai

Met officials forecast rains for next two days in the city

Chennai: Cold evenings and nights with dipping temperatures in the past one week have given way to rains in the city. On Sunday, some parts of the city received light rain and sky conditions were generally cloudy. Met officials forecast rains for the next two days in the city and the sky to be cloudy. Coastal parts of the state are set to receive heavier showers in the next three days.

Met officials say that the low pressure formed on Saturday in the southwest bay off the north Tamil Nadu coast persisted on Sunday, giving rains to the city and state. Mr S.B. Thampi, deputy director of regional meteorological department, says, “ The low pressure in the south coast of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka has led to the rains. Over the next two days, we expect heavy rains along the coast. Chennai will also receive isolated showers.” He ruled out the possibility of the formation of a depression or intensification of the low pressure.

Mr Thampi adds that in the city, rains will continue for the next two days.

On Sunday, the city received 1.6 mm rainfall and the Met centre in Meenambakkam recorded 2.6 mm. A wind speed of 7.5 kmph was also recorded towards evening in the city. The minimum and maximum temperatures were 24.6 and 26.2 degree Celsius on Sunday.

On Monday, Met officials forecast the sky condition in the city to be generally cloudy. One or two spells of spells of rain or thundershowers may occur in some areas. Maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 26 and 23 degrees Celsius.

For the next 48 hours, the sky condition will be generally cloudy. Rain or thundershowers may occur in some areas. Maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 28 and 24 degrees Celsius.

Last year, in the same month, on 29th, temperatures had dipped to a minimum of 22 degrees Celsius.

For the state, the Met department predicts moderate to rather heavy rain at many places over Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts of coastal TN.
