PM Modi tells top cops use SMART policing to change the face of the force

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday told DGPs and IGPs to use “SMART” policing to change the face of the force, adding that if intelligence networks were used more efficiently, weapons would be needed less.

“When I say SMART policing, each letter of the acronym symbolises some meaning S for Sensitive and Strict, M for Modern and Mobile, A for Alert and Accountable, R for Responsible and Reliable, and T for Techno savvy and Trained.”

Addressing the 49th annual conference of DGPs, IGPs, the Prime Minister also said films were to blame for the negative image of the police in the media, urging filmmakers to make more “positive” films.

“Films show police in such poor light that the people of the country have developed a very negative image of the police force.

I would suggest that the government hire a PR firm and hold a meeting with producers to request projecting the positive rather than the negative image of the police,” Mr Modi said.

He however admitted that police too have certain shortcomings. “There are shortcomings, but there are also ways of removing those shortcomings. One negative news about police run for long time, but hundreds of good things about the police never get the focus,” Mr Modi said.
