Doctor-RMP nexus proves unhealthy
RMPs are suggesting operations and surgeries to patients even for harmless ailments
Karimnagar: Several private hospitals in Karimnagar city reportedly recruit rural medical practitioners (RMPs) as marketing executives by offering huge commissions in order to boost their business. In turn, the RMPs would recommend the hospitals to patients from their villages. Some doctors operate in direct connection with the RMPs and charge hefty amount as fee from the patients.
Karimnagar city is preferred for better medical services not only to public of the district but also of neighbouring Adilabad, Nizamabad and Warangal districts. Good road connectivity and presence of scores of super specialty and multi-specialty hospitals make many to rely on the city for medical treatment.
One can understand the importance the city has in the field of medicine looking at the Doctor Street which exclusively encompasses hospitals of all types. Many of the doctors from neighbouring districts in north Telangana migrate to Karimnagar to earn more considering the large number of patients visiting the city.
In 1980s and 90s, private hospitals mushroomed in the city. Consequently, there was a tough compeition which prompted many to find dubious ways to manage things.
About 50 per cent of the money collected from patients is given to the RMPs as commission.
Meanwhile, some greedy RMPs, it is learnt, are suggesting operations and surgeries to patients even for harmless ailements to make money. Many patients feel there should be a mechanism to check the menace.
Officials should focus on maintaining sanitation in rural as well as towns to prevent the spread of seasonal diseases which are easily carried by mosquitoes and flies.
