Reporters' Diary: Uttar Pradesh’s angry brigade

Uttar Pradesh is turning into one big angry state these days

Uttar Pradesh’s angry brigade

The Samajwadi Party is fast turning into a party of angry men both, young and old. Samajwadi party president Mulayam Singh Yadav is angry because the Uttar Pradesh government is not picking up pace. He lashed out in public against his son and chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and also warned the ministers that it would take him “two minutes” to show them the door.

Senior SP minister Mohd Azam Khan is angry — no, very angry — with the media that criticised the 75th birthday celebrations of Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav in Rampur. Mr Khan spewed venom at the media on the occasion and ended his speech with “do whatever you want to do”. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is also angry with the media for maligning his government. He refuses to acknowledge greetings from mediapersons and, if prodded further, walks off with “you can show whatever you want to show” remark.

SP’s Ram Gopal Yadav also joins the angry brigade and blows a fuse each time he is asked about the Amar Singh factor in his party. Apart from this, the SP MLAs are angry because no one listens to them, while the Opposition is angry because the government does not listen to them. In short, Uttar Pradesh is turning into one big angry state these days.

The fight within

When two “power points” of Assam politics fight, it’s the Opposition that has the last laugh. It all began when former Cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was rigorously interrogated for eight hours by the CBI in Kolkata. Soon after the interrogation was over on Wednesday, Mr Sarma said, “My name has been dragged into the Saradha scam following a letter purportedly written by Sudipta Sen, chief of the Saradha group.

This letter was written in 2011, at a time when Mr Gogoi had started disliking me. I was no longer powerful then to do any favour. I had become weak since Gaurav Gogoi (Tarun Gogoi’s son) entered politics.” To this, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that Mr Sarma was a powerful minister. “I never consider Himanta a weak leader of my party,” said Mr Gogoi. Though it was not known if the CBI ghost was hounding them, when Congressmen fight, it’s Advantage BJP.
