Karnataka invites EoIs on new Tungabhadra dam

It is thinking of constructing another dam upstream of the existing Tungabhadra Dam
Hyderabad: Karnataka irrigation officials have informed the AP and Telangana Engineering-in-Chiefs (E-in-C) on Saturday that their government is thinking of constructing another dam upstream of the existing Tungabhadra Dam at Hospet and has invited Expressions of Interest from international consulting agencies.
They also told the E-in-Cs that as the matter of sharing Krishna/Tungabhadra waters among riparian states including fresh pleas on reopening the hearings at the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal are at present in the SC, the Karnataka government will not raise it at the Tungabhadra Dam Board meeting.
Karnataka irrigation minister M.B. Patil had announced the construction of a new dam upstream of the Tungabhadra Dam to make up losses due to heavy sedimentation. The Tungabhadra Dam Board meeting held on Saturday in Bengaluru was attended by AP E-in-C K. Venkateswara Rao and Telangana E-in-C C. Muralidhar.
However, the construction of the new dam did not figure at the meeting as it was not part of the agenda. When the E-in-Cs enquired about the proposed new dam Karnataka officials confirmed inviting EoIs.
“Anyhow, Telangana has decided to lodge a complaint with the Krishna River Management Board as well as the Central Water Commission about Karnataka unilaterally planning a new dam which will be detrimental to our interests,” Mr Muralidhar said.
Meanwhile, the TB Dam meeting has approved the Karnataka government’s decision to go ahead with the preparation of DPRs (Detailed Project Reports) for the modernisation of TB dam canals including the TBP high level and low level canals in Karnataka to avoid water seepage which reduces the water available for AP.
According to my information the TB Board has approved the proposal and now the Karnataka government will prepare DPRs, said AP irrigation minister Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao.
