AOC to restrict civilian traffic
Hyderabad: Areas in Malkajgiri (Hanumpet ), Safilguda and Trimulgherry crossroads are being surveyed for alternative routes once a total ban is imposed for civilian traffic in the AOC.
The North Zone GHMC officials, along with the civilian committee formed by the Army, have identified certain pockets surrounding the AOC that can be developed as connecting roads.
The traffic restriction issue was also raised in Parliament and the plan of alternative routes was submitted to Union secretary of defense.
The ongoing survey is being done by a consultant appointed by the GHMC. It is to study the traffic at the Safilguda gate, Thukkaram gate (Jyothinagar) and at the Trimulgherry crossroads. Even open spaces are being identified to help connect the roads.
The GHMC will hold talks with the defense ministry to request them to permit an alternative route from Safilguda to the Allahabad gate, which is within the AOC. Currently, the routes from Safilguda passing through the AOC are witnessing the highest civilian vehicle movement.
Speaking to this correspondent, Malkajgiri MP C. Malla Reddy said, “The Cantonment roads were developed using civilians' tax money.
The defense ministry has established its sector only a few years ago, however, the connectivity has been there for more than 40 years.
We have also suggested that the sensitive defence institutions can shift to Shameerpet and other areas that have abundant land.
The AOC is the only major connectivity to 13 lakh people. Commuters take these roads to save distance and time. I have submitted a representation to the defence ministry and even the Andhra Sub-Area Commander.
The issue will be taken up with the defence minister.” Currently, following the High Court order, the AOC authorities are restricting civilian traffic only between 10 pm and 7 am every day.
