Number of HIV cases in state comes down

As many as 1,464 cases have been identified this year till October

Kollam: A slight decline in the number of HIV infected in the State in the last few years was achieved by the keen efforts taken by the Kerala State Aids Control Society (KSACS). The society is gearing up for this year’s World AIDS Day on December 1.

The total number of those infected in 2007 was 3,972 which showed a minute but steady decline to reach 1,740 in 2013.

As many as 1,464 cases have been identified this year till October. “KSACS has been in the forefront in combating the deadly virus. Treatment has improved a lot.

A patient or those infected usually die within two years. This condition has had a turnaround with the advent of advanced anti-retroviral treatment or ART.

This helps improve the immune system”, said Dr P. Babuchandran, Deputy DMO. The death rate can be further lowered by ensuring ART for all those infected. KSACS offers counselling in Ushus.
