Sri Lankan gets 5-yr jail for working for ISI

Suspected ISI agent was convicted on charges of smuggling counterfeit currency

Chennai: Mohammed Sakir Hussain, a suspected ISI agent from Sri Lankan was convicted on Friday to five years by a special court in Poonamallee on charges of smuggling counterfeit currency.“At the time of his arrest, he was in possession of Rs 2.53 lakh worth high quality fake Indian currency notes (FICN) meant to be circulated in the country to destabilize the economy,” said special public prosecutor C.S.S. Pillai who appeared in the case.

Special court judge M Moni pronounced the verdict on Friday, a day after Hussain pleaded guilty in the court by confessing that he entered India on the instructions of two of Pakistani embassy officials based in Colombo. Two of his accomplice Siva Balan and Mohammed Saleem denied the charges against them.

“Sakir Hussain was convicted for five years under section 16 and another five years under section 18 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention (UAP). He is also sentenced for two years under IPC sections 120B and 489C on charges of conspiracy,” Pillai said, adding that all the jail terms will run concurrently.
