Women to make up 10 per cent of cops by 2016: Ramesh Chennithala
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has said that the representation of women in the police force will be made above 10 percent by 2016.
Inaugurating a national conference for women police here on Thursday, he said that at present representation of women in the state police was only less than five percent.
To increase their representation, the Kerala Public Service Commission has amended a clause that restricted recruitment of women to the police.
Also training of 250 women cops was going on and 60 women sub-inspectors would be recruited soon.
Mr. Chennithala also said that the first of the six new all- women police stations being planned in the state would be inaugurated at Harippad on November 29.
DGP Prisons T.P. Senkumar said that to ensure that women enjoyed their rights, men should be taught the rights of women.
Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar, additional chief secretary (home) Nivedita P. Haran, DGP community policing M.N. Krishnamoorthy, ADGP south-zone K. Padmakumar, Kerala State Women's Development Corporation chairperson P. Kulsu and AIG coastal security Uma Behera also spoke.
