Telangana State to get forensic boost; 3 labs to come up in districts
Hyderabad: Telangana State will get forensic boost for police investigation as Chief Minister K. Chandra-sekhara Rao has cleared the project in the wake of pending cases. Three regional forensic labs will come up in Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda and Adilabad districts.
Warangal will get a DNA lab with increasing cases of paternity tests and rape cases. DNA lab in Hyderabad will be enhanced with special budget for DNA testing kits.
A senior police official of Telangana said, “APFSL is a tenth schedule institution. After the recent meetings with the women committee on safety of women in Telangana Ajay Misra, special secretary of GAD, wrote to the DGP on the need for strengthening forensic investigation in the state.”
Regional forensic labs exist in Warangal, Karimnagar and Cyberabad.
“DNA lab at Hyderabad FSL has suffered earlier due to lack of adequate DNA fingerprinting test kits. With the new budget the kits will be purchased and staggered delivery system will be followed so that they are available round the year. In rape cases the DNA fingerprinting is vital evidence. New teams will be formed for DNA test and equipment that can fingerprint the mitochondrial DNA will be purchased,” said the official.
In the recent Mahbubnagar bus tragedy, samples were sent to the Centre for DNA fingerprinting and Diagnostics as mitochondrial DNA extracting equipment is not available with APFSL.
“In Warangal, we have a toxicology lab and now we will have DNA lab too. Likewise, in the three new RFSLs coming up in Mahbubnagar, Adilabad and Nalgonda toxicology labs will also be set up,” said the official.
