Opposition role cut as CBI Bill gets nod
The issue of quorum would not arise and the anointment would be valid and legal
New Delhi: The role of the Opposition in the appointment of the head of the country’s premier investigative agency, the CBI, has been curtailed as Parliament on Thursday gave its nod to the amendments in the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1945 by making it clear that in case of absence of any member in the collegium to decide on the prospective name, the issue of quorum would not arise and the anointment would be valid and legal.
The collegium, which is headed by the PM, comprises Chief Justice of India or a representative sent by him and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and after the amendment leader of the single-largest party in the LS.
