Maharaja’s hostel roofs give girls the creeps

In a room where only 4 girls can be housed, up to seven girls have been packed

KOCHI: Girl students of Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, which has attained the status of an autonomous college, are a harried lot as their two-storeyed hostel is in a bad condition, making their life miserable.

The other day, a girl narrowly escaped as a portion of the ceiling of the bathroom fell down.

The students say that the condition of the floors and roof is getting from bad to worse while authorities are sitting on a proposal to build a new hostel as recommended by the PWD, which made an inspection of the present hostel and declared it uninhabitable, said a girl student who resides there.

“Although there are only 28 rooms that can accommodate 100 persons, 130 students have been packed in there. In a room where only 4 girls can be housed, up to seven girls have been packed.

Even a mess hall has been converted into a room while a dormitory too is functioning as a room,” said an inmate.

The girls blamed frequent changes at the helm as one of the reasons for the new hostel not materializing. “The principals are changed so frequently. The present principal says he does not have any idea about the PWD plan and sketch and it seems the file is also missing from the office.

Already a place has been identified for building the hostel but there is no movement as the College Development Council headed by the District Collector also does not show any interest in it,” said KSU leader K Sethuraj.

The students say Rs 2000 was collected from them towards rent and mess and yet they failed to give quality housing facilities.
