Kerala firm gets US patent of turmeric for Alzheimer disease
Kochi: A turmeric extract formulation, BCM 95, developed by Aluvabased Arjuna Natural Extracts has received a US patent for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
It was based on a study and clinical trials on humans done at Chinese University of Hong Kong and another ongoing clinical trial in patients with Alzheimer’s disease by Cowan University in Australia that the US patent was awarded.
“BCM 95 is the reblend of two bio-active constituents of turmeric, curcuminoid and an essential oil of turmeric, which is different from the normally used turmeric extract curcumin. Compared to normal curcumin, BCM 95 is seven times more bio-active. This composition will be a safe alternative to control Alzheimer’s giving hope to millions of patients,” said Mr. Benny Antony, joint managing director of Arjuna Natural Extracts, who heads the research and technical division of the company.
“In 2005 we applied for the patent and the first patent was granted in 2010. The Centre approved us as a research centre and allocated Rs 3.5 crore for a clinical stu-dy of BCM 95 in treating oral cancer. The clinical study is being conducted in three major hospitals,” said Mr. Antony.
Apart from Alzheimer’s disease, the composition is also being studied for various other indications such as depression, diabetes, inflammation and liver diseases.
