3 newborns die at Adukkamparai GH in Vellore
Chennai-Vellore: Even as Dharmapuri is struggling to bounce back to normalcy following an alarming number of neonatal deaths, a fresh incident of the deaths of three newborns at the Government Medical College and Hospital at Adukkamparai government hospital in Vellore was reported in the state on Wednesday. According to health officials, three newborns including two males were admitted to the GH during the week.
Doctors who attended to the infants said the babies arrived in a critical condition and were treated at the Neonatal ICU. But they could not be saved as they failed to respond to the treatment. According to Dr E. Theranirajan, Prof and HOD, Paediatric department, one of the babies was referred from Tiruppathur GH with complaints of convulsions and meningitis and recurring apnea. This pre-term male baby weighed 1.4 kg.
The second male baby born out of a C-section on Wednesday developed multiple congenital anomalies affecting the kidney and heart and died within eight hours, he added. The third child, which was 15-days-old, had developed breathing problem and was referred from Tiruvannamalai GH. At present, 61 babies are being treated at the NICU. Of them, three newborns were shifted from Dharmapuri last week and one among them was handed over to the parents.
