Centre wants sophisticated weapons, technology for anti-terror forces

Anti-terrorist forces should remain a step ahead of all subversive elements

New Delhi: In a bid to launch a major anti-terrorism offensive, the Narendra Modi government has on the eve of the 26/11 attacks decided on a specific time-bound upgradation of sophisticated weapons and technology for special forces and commando units in counter-terror operations.

Sources said, while the “broad contours of the scheme” were decided in principle, a final call will be taken by the Cabinet committee on security.

There is a growing view that anti-terrorist forces should remain a step ahead of all subversive elements. The Centre wants the forces not only to have advanced weapons and technology, but that these be “upgraded within a stipulated timeframe.”

On the sixth anniversary of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, Union home minister Rajnath Singh voiced concern over the “very slow” progress in the trial in Pakistan; while, PM Mr Modi tweeted, “We remember the horrific terror attacks in Mumbai on this day in 2008 and pay homage to innocent men and women who lost their lives.”
