Bird flu: 1,290 ducks culled in Aymanam

5 teams of the rapid action force will begin the culling in Kumarakom panchayat
Kottayam: With the confirmation of bird flu in the district, 1,290 infected ducks were culled, burnt and buried by six squads of the rapid action force at Kollathukara in Aymanam panchayat on Wednesday.
According to animal husbandry department sources, another five teams of the rapid action force will begin the culling in Kumarakom panchayat on Thursday.
District collector Ajith Kumar told a meeting of various departments at the collectorate that the bird flu was under control. “Some 30,000 tablets meant to stop the infection in humans will come from Rajasthan. Each panchayat can spend Rs 50,000 to take measures to control the bird flu,” he added.
The Kumarakom bird sanctuary has been closed as a precaution. An 84-member team of the health department examined 2, 280 people in 748 houses in nine wards of six panchayats.
“Twenty persons handling birds were examined. No symptoms of bird flu were found among anyone,” district medical officer, Dr Iysha Bhai told Deccan Chronicle.
