70 per cent schools in Hyderabad fail fire safety test

40 per cent of commercial outlets in Hyderabad function without the NOC
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation will now track down commercial buildings without fire safety measures, as records state that 40 per cent of commercial outlets in Greater Hyderabad function without the No Objection Certificates.
Though the last day to seek NOCs for fire safety was November 20, only 13 applicants had approached the GHMC. There have been instances wherein buildings have caught fire twice and on both occasions there were no fire safety measures in place despite the Corporation’s warning.
Of the 20,164 buildings identified in the GHMC area, only 1,800 have been issued NOCs. Buildings in the Charminar area, Kukatpally, Ameerpet and Abids, which are built on as less as 200 sq. yard area, have not only violated fire norms but building regulations as well.
As per records, in Greater Hyderabad, only 893 educational institutions (30 per cent) have complied with fire safety norms and put the necessary equipment in place and taken No Objection Certificates from the Fire Prevention Wing of GHMC. The rest have not complied with the mandatory norms.
“Building owners who fail to register with GHMC regarding fire safety measures will have to face consequences. Owners must visit the GHMC website and register. However, the last date was November 20 for registration; applicants are further requested to apply for NOCs, failing which stern action will be initiated,” stated officials of the Fire Prevention Wing.
The GHMC has also asked all owners of hospitals, schools, function halls, timber depots, hotels and restaurants, malls to register their buildings on its website and to seek NOCs. Barring this, the occupancy certificate or trade license of the building will be cancelled.
