Turbulence in Parliament over NTR terminal at RGIA
NEW DELHI: The NDA government’s decision to restore the name of N.T. Rama Rao to the domestic terminal of the Hyderabad Airport had its echo in Parliament on Tuesday with the TRS members taking objection to the move in the Lok Sabha and Congress members forcing an adjournment in the Rajya Sabha.
The TRS and the Congress raised the issue during the Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha respectively demanding that the Union government immediately withdraw the order that was issued last week.
The civil aviation ministry had last week restored the name of NTR to the domestic terminal of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.
Congress’ deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma said it was “unacceptable” and they will not allow the House to function as his party MPs trooped into the Well shouting slogans and waving placards that led to two adjournments in the pre-lunch session.
Congress members demanded that Rajiv Gandhi’s name should continue in both the domestic as well as the international terminals of the airport.
As the members remained unrelenting, P.J. Kurien, who was in the chair adjourned the House for ten minutes till noon. But, similar scenes were witnessed when the House resumed at noon.
In Lok Sabha, TRS MP B. Vinod Kumar asked the government to withdraw the decision to name the domestic terminal of Hyderabad airport, which was opposed by TD’s Srinivasa Rao.
He maintained that no airport had different names for domestic and international terminals.
Mr Rao said the government has just “rectified a mistake” by retaining NTR’s name for the domestic terminal and demanded that the government should maintain status quo.
