Telangana State, Andhra Pradesh ignore colour orange
It is in support of eliminating violence against women
Hyderabad: While the whole world is sporting the colour orange in support of eliminating violence against women, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh don’t have anything planned.
While some said that the current Assembly session was the cause for not organising any events, others pointed out that the colour orange in India has a different meaning altogether. Some were not even aware of the 16-day programme being conducted by the United Nations.
Poonam Malakondaiah, secretary of the Telangana Department of Women and Child Welfare, said, “We are not doing anything right now because the Assembly is in session. We have, however, planned for many events in the first week of December and are planning to have a series of discussions with the police. We have already started with many concrete plans and there will be a change.”
The secretary of the UN had announced the theme for this year’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women as “Orange your neighbourhood.” A 16-day-long event called “UNiTE to end violence against women” kicked off on Tuesday.
Landmarks like the Empire State Building and UN Headquarters in New York, the NASDAQ and the Reuters Tower screens flashed orange for the first time.
The Shaheen Women’s group is organising a seminar on Wednesday called “Say No to Discrimination.” “Our agenda is to discuss existing laws,” said Ms Jameela Nishat, founder of Shaheen. The State Mahila Commission also organised a seminar on Tuesday.
