Kids missing, Andhra Pradesh police question parents

Police suspects parents sold kids; say questioning part of interrogation

Vijayawada: Instead of consoling the parents of missing children and immediately launching a search for them, the city police here is taking strange steps to track down the missing children.

Suspecting that the parents themselves may have sold their children, the police is forcing the parents of missing children to come to the police station for questioning.

When six-year-old B. Bhavani went missing on November 1, her father B. Srinu, who runs a laundry shop at Paipula Road, lodged a complaint with the Ajit Singhnagar police.

However, soon after receiving the complaint, the police took Mr Srinu and his wife to the police station and interrogated them to check if they had sold their child. Mr Srinu was allegedly even beaten up. After the interrogation, the couple was let off.

The father and relatives of four-year-old P. Kavya, who went missing on Sunday, too are similarly being interrogated by the police of II Town. Kavya was kidnapped by unidentified men in a car, according to the complaint.

When asked about such treatment of parents of missing children during a press conference on Monday, police commissioner A.B. Venkateswara Rao said that they suspect the role of kidnap gangs in the disappearance of the two girls. However, the police is questioning the parents as a part of interrogation procedure.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Mr Srinu said that the police, so far, has not found any clue about his missing daughter. “The sub-inspector said that a search is on to find her but there has been no progress,” he said.
