1 in 4 women suffers abuse: Survey
23% of women in Chennai have experienced sex abuse
Chennai: Despite increased worldwide awareness about violence against women in recent times, many women are still subjected to domestic violence and sexual harassment. A recent survey conducted by a private hospital revealed that 23 percent of women in Chennai have experienced sex abuse, molestation or harassment at home, work place or during travel.
Dr D. Rajasekar, gynaecologist and managing director of WCF hospitals, decided to conduct a survey to get an insight into people’s attitude towards factors related to sexual crimes.
“Of the 7,605 people surveyed, 4,469 were from Chennai and 2,973 from other districts of the state and 161 from other states, including 60 transgenders and many professionals,” he said.
The gynaecologist said 41.3 per cent felt that death sentence should be upheld for rape. “When asked if a code on dressing would prevent rape or sexual harassment, a majority of people replied yes (73.6 %) to our surprise,” said Dr Rajasekar.
Interestingly, only participants younger than 25 years felt the need for dress restrictions. Reacting to the survey, poet-activist Salma said, “Women themselves fail to understand that there is no connection between the manner of dressing and sexual assault. We need to educate our children. Our family system and films should learn to respect women,” she said.
