'Superman’ is not the first time Arjun Kapoor showed love towards Salman

In conversation with music composer Wajid on chartbuster 'Superman'

Mumbai: The first track of Arjun Kapoor’s next film ‘Tevar’ was released earlier this week. The song composed by Sajid-Wajid features the Kapoor lad dancing in the by lanes of Mathura flashing his new attitude and showing his love towards Salman. Ironically the lyrics go, ‘Mei toh superman, Salman ka fan’ and it’s not the first time Arjun has showered love for his idol. In his debut film, ‘Ishaqzaade’, Arjun Kapoor was seen wearing track pants with ‘Dabangg’ printed on its rear side. Even in the singing department, Wajid, who has been the voice for many hit songs of Salman, is now the voice of Arjun Kapoor, flashing a new ‘Tevar’ in singing. We chat with Wajid about his chartbuster track.

What kind of feedback you are getting from the first song?

I got thousands of tweets from the time it has been launched.

How did you and Sajid come up with the line ‘ Mei toh superman, Salman ka fan’?

It’s actually a line written by Sajid and he used to generally say this line on many occasions, ‘Mei toh Superman, Salman ka fan’. The song is all about attitude and once we decided to lock this line we composed the song. When Boney Kapoor called us and told us the title of the film, we told him we have the opening track. Arjun Kapoor also called us and said we have to rock in this one. He is like a younger brother and he wanted us as composers for the film. When Boney came for the music sitting we told him that we have made a song. He heard the song and he was shocked. Arjun's character is a boy from Agra and his language is like this in the film and so everything syncs perfectly.

What was Arjun’s reaction like?

Arjun told us that he was very happy with the song. If the attitude of the song is correct, it helps the film. A song like this has given a great start to a film and for a music director that means a lot. When the song comes out, it should help the film.

What was Salman’s reaction to the song?

He launched the song in Bigg Boss and has loved it ever since.

Today, how important is the role of music in Indian films?

If the music is not good then you don’t get the dynamic right for the film. A good music, average scene ko extra ordinary kar deta hai. Music has emotions, aggression and you can convey a lot in the storyline of the film through music. Conversations can be conveyed through the lyrics of a song. My aim is to increase the adrenaline rush and add more power to the visuals of the film. If I can do that, it automatically attracts the audience. All this is teamwork because it also depends on how the song is being ultimately shot. In this song, Arjun is looking superb and Remo has captured it very well and it has good production value.

Given Arjun’s fondness for Salman, it is clearly visible how much he is enjoying the song…

Yes Arjun has loved shooting this song. I know him from those days when he did not think of being a hero. I know what he thinks about Salman, I am also extremely fond of him, so this combination has worked out well. For me, the fact that I have sung this song makes it special for me. Salman has helped Arjun a lot and he is like that, he helps everyone. Conveying this song through Arjun in the film gives it a better meaning.

What can your fans expect from the next track of Tevar?

Fans will be totally blown away by the next track. It’s a fusion Indian classical track featuring Sonakshi Sinha and we are launching a new voice in this song.

How involved were Boney Kapoor or Sanjay Kapoor in the making of the music?

They were always there to listen to the song. Boney is a very involved producer and has a good ear for music. Sanjay called me from Europe when he heard the Superman track and said ‘tum log ne kamal kar diya’. All this means a lot to us. Picture badhi nahi hoti, your work, everybody’s passion makes it big.
