Medical colleges told to make fee structure public
Chennai: The Madras high court has directed private medical colleges to make public the fees collected by them and the rank list of students admitted to the colleges.
Disposing of a PIL filed by G. Vijayakumar, the first bench of the court, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M. Sathyanarayanan, said the fees and other charges payable at the time of admission should be mentioned in the prospectus of the private colleges.
The bench said, “For the candidates to have sufficient time to shift their admission from one college to the other, the merit list should be published on September 20, instead of September 23 of every year. Consequently, the commencement of admission should be from September 20 and the last date of admission should be September 27 so that one week’s time is available, inclusive of any holiday, for a candidate to shift admission.”
The rank list should be hosted at 11 am on September 20, and should remain on the website throughout the entire period of its currency till 5 pm of the closing date, the judges said, adding that the list should be available on the official website and the notice board of private colleges. “The arrangement should be made applicable from next year,” the bench added.
In the petition, Vijayakumar sought the authorities, including the Medical Council of India and director of medical education in Tamil Nadu, to admit students under the management quota for MBBS courses by adopting a centralised procedure without issuing a fresh prospectus.
He said the prospectus should specify relevant details and ensure that admissions were done only on the basis of merit, and transparency should maintained.
