Minister wants sugar factories to take up crushing
Problems for farmers will become less if sugar factories start crushing sugarcane
Belagavi: Sugar minister Mahadev Prasad appealed to managements of sugar factories to resume crushing of sugarcane and to avoid burdening farmers with more problems. At a meeting held here to find a lasting solution to the crisis faced by farmers, the minister invited these managements for a meeting with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah shortly. Leaders of cane growers and representatives of most sugar factories of north Karnataka attended the meeting but could not end the impasse.
At the meeting, the minister stated that more than 400 lakh tonnes of cane crop in the three sugarcane-rich districts has not been harvested owing to the delay in commencement of crushing. Within the next two days, the factories should start crushing of sugarcane, and their owners should meet Mr. Siddaramaiah to discuss about payment of pending bills of farmers, he added.
Minister Prasad, however, made it clear that the price of Rs 2500 per tonne fixed by the government should be paid to farmers as the high court had upheld the government’s decision.
