Maharaja’s Council meets amid protests

Police intervened on the spot and removed the protesters after arresting them

KOCHI: Left leaning students and teachers on Saturday staged a protest at Maharaja’s College as the Governing Council of the autonomous college held its first meeting in the day at the college with Prof P K Abdul Aziz in the chair.

The academic council and board of studies of the college also held their first meetings prior to the Governing Council meet.

The UGC is yet to appoint its nominee to the Governing Council, but the chairman convened the meeting as the government asked him to convene it.

Teachers under the banner of AKGCTA and students under SFI staged a dharna in front of the principal’s office and also gheraoed Abdul Aziz demanding to withdraw the decision to grant autonomy to Maharaja’s College. Police intervened on the spot and removed the protesters after arresting them.

Abdul Aziz told DC after the meeting that a finance committee was formed to prepare a estimate for the coming activities and the board of studies and head of departments were given instruction to give suggestions on revising syllabuses of both UG and PG courses of the autonomous college.

“Since it was the first meet, we did not dwell much into other things and in the coming days we will concretise plans,” said Aziz.
