Centre firm on FDI in insurance

The Centre said it is determined to go ahead with it in the winter session of Parliament

New Delhi: Unfazed by the Opposition’s hard positions on passage of reform legislations like Insurance Bill, the Centre on Saturday said it is determined to go ahead with the measures in the winter session of Parliament beginning on Monday.

However, it parried questions on whether the government plans to convene a joint session for passage of some of these legislations if consensus with Congress and other opposition parties was not possible.

“We are determined to go ahead. Merely because someone has an agenda only to obstruct is not going to deter us,” Union finance minister Arun Jaitley said.

Trinamool chief and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said her party would oppose any attempt to pass the Bill in Parliament to raise FDI cap in insurance sector to 49 per cent and will be vocal against the Centre over communal violence.
