RT Nagar school abuse: Sexual assault or corporal punishment?
Medical examination reveal injuries but there is no conformation of sexual assult
Bengaluru: The police investigating the alleged sexual assault of a six-year-old girl student by a woman teacher at a school in RT Nagar are yet to ascertain whether it was a case of sexual abuse or corporal punishment.Police sources claimed that preliminary medical examinations at B.R. Ambedkar Hospital prima facie reveal injuries at the student’s private parts, but there was no confirmation whether it was a sexual assault.
The police are questioning the teachers and non-teaching staff at the school. “The police are in the process of recording the statements of the school staffers and we have referred this case to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) members, who will probe into the case further,” said T.R. Suresh, DCP North Division. The police have booked the case under POCSO and the investigations are underway.
Meanwhile the child is undergoing counselling at NIMHANS. The police and the CWC members are in the process of gaining confidence of the child to gather more details about the accused staffer.An officer from DPI told this newspaper that they were awaiting the medical report and the police investigation report. “As per POCSO Act and RTE, even corporal punishment is banned. Action will be initiated under the various provisions of both the Acts,” he said.
The case was registered on Friday night by the girl’s parents at RT Nagar police station. While playing outside her house the girl’s nose began to bleed. When questioned by her mother, she told her that she was beaten up by a woman teacher at the school who also hurt her private parts.
School closed
Even though Saturday was a working day for Navodaya Vidyaniketan school, the management had announced holiday. Some parents claimed that the holiday was announced in view of protest by parents. However, some other informed that school students were on an academic tour in two batches and the holiday was announced well in advance. No representative from the management was available for reaction.
Tight security
Following prior information that parents will hold protest in front of the school, R T Nagar police imposed tight security around the school. DCP Suresh supervised the security arrangements and visited the school on Saturday.
