PMK eyes rainbow alliance against Dravidian parties
PMK announced that they would form coalition with parties interested in public welfare
Chennai: The PMK on Friday announced that it would form a coalition of like-minded parties that were interested in public welfare and development against Dravidian parties and expressed confidence of forming the government in 2016. In contrast to the overwhelming ‘Anbumani for CM’ sentiment, expressed in the executive committee meeting on Thursday, PMK's general council stopped short of making the announcement.
Addressing the party’s general council meeting here, PMK founder Dr S. Ramadoss listed out eight parties as potential allies and said that people of the state were sick of both the AIADMK and DMK. He appealed to the parties, including Puthiya Tamilagam, Naam Tamilar and the Tamil Nationalist Movement, to join the alliance led by his party. “Though all these eight parties are small ones, they will strengthen our alliance,” he said. Interestingly, the PMK, which contested the Lok Sabha polls in April under the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, did not invite the saffron party or its allies, the DMDK or MDMK.
It invited only the Indiya Jananayaka Katchi (IJK), Kongu Makkal Desiya Katchi and New Justice party to join its front. Recalling actor Rajinikanth’s appeal against the AIADMK government in the 1996 election, Dr Ramadoss said that the actor who had made a brave statement against the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa should once again issue a similar appeal against the present government too.
“Only PMK can provide an alternative to the Dravidian parties in the state,” he said. Pointing to the ouster of the 35-year-long Left regime in West Bengal by the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC, PMK leader and former union health minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss said that the people of Tamil Nadu would also deliver such a verdict to remove the Dravidian parties from power in the state after 47 years.
“People are now looking for a credible alternative and we will be able to provide it. We are offering decent and development politics to the people,” he said, adding that his party would provide a transparent and corruption-free government.Dr Anbumani said that if his party were voted to power, the first decision to be taken by it would be to enforce prohibition in the state. He said that his party was against freebies being given to the people, but it would provide free education, health facilities and agriculture.
“A free comprehensive health scheme would be introduced in the state. A litre of milk would be provided free for a period of one year for newborn babies,” he said.
A senior PMK leader said that Dr Anbumani was a natural choice of CM candidate and there was no need to make a formal announcement.
