Winter warmer, confirms Met

This year the lowest so far has been 16 degree Celsius

Hyderabad: Winter chills have registered an increase with minimum temperatures dipping substantially by five units, from 21.8 to 17 degree Celsius in just a day.

Hyderabad has been recording a consistent 17 degree celsius since some days and this is expected to continue. However, when compared to the lowest minimum temperatures of previous years this winter is definitely warmer by four to five degrees.

Adilabad recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 11 degree Celsius across the state, followed by Arogyavaram at 16 degree Celsius. On November 9 Hyderabad recorded 16 degree Celsius.

Met officials credit the dip to several reasons like the formation of low pressure systems in the Bay of Bengal, cold and dry North-Easterly winds and absence of cloud formation leading to more ground radiation.

“Since the skies are clear the heat is getting reflected back and since there are no clouds to stop it the temperatures have been dipping,” said M. Narsimha Rao, assistant meteorologist at the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre.

In 2012 and 2013 minimum temperatures touched about 12 and 14 respectively in November itself. But, this year the lowest so far has been 16 degree Celsius.

A 12.4 degree Celsius was recorded on November 19, 2012, while it was 18.6 in 2013. In 2014, it has remained at 21.3 degree Celsius.

Weather department officials have also indicated a likely low pressure on November 25 and 26 that may bring rains to Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.

“The chances of a low pressure forming over South Bay of Bengal is likely, but we are yet to confirm it. If it all it forms the effect is mostly going to be on South Coastal AP and Rayalaseema as per our model.

There are no chances of it intensifying into a depression or a cyclonic storm and Telangana will not receive any rains. This will move as a low pressure towards Sri Lanka and disintegrate,” M. Narsimha Rao said.
