Salem: Two more newborns including an infant from Dharmapuri died in Salem on Friday, raising the toll of infant deaths at Salem and Dharmapuri government hospitals to 17 in just 7 days. One of the two newborns shifted from Dharmapuri government hospital to the Dr Mohan Kumaramangalam government hospital in Salem in a critical stage died on Friday morning without responding to treatment, officials confirmed.
The boy baby of a couple Subash and Sujitha from Chengam in Tiruvannamalai district was admitted to the Dharmapuri government hospital with severe respiratory problem last Monday. The newborn which was shifted to the neonatal care unit of the Salem governemnt hospital breathed his last on Friday, hospital doctors said.
The four day old girl baby of an auto rickshaw driver Arun and his wife Sathya of Arisipalaym in Salem city also died on Friday. In all, 17 newborns have died in about a week in the two government hospitals, triggering protests from social activists. In Salem government hospital, four kids have died in the last two days.
