MP Srinjoy Bose, close to CM Mamata Banerjee, held in ponzi scam
Behind the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam, the CBI arrested Srinjoy Bose
Kolkata: Launching a crackdown on “influential persons involved in the larger conspiracy” behind the multi crore Saradha chit fund scam, the CBI arrested Trinamool’s Rajya Sabha MP Srinjoy Bose Friday after interrogating him for over five hours.
Considered close to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Mr Bose is editor of Bengali daily Sangbad Pratidin and Trinamool mouthpiece Jago Bangla. His arrest is a major blow to the party. Ms Banerjee earlier gave him a clean chit in the Saradha scam.
Mr Bose, grilled by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office and the ED earlier, arrived at the CBI’s Salt Lake office around 10.45 am after a summons for the second time. Asked if he was worried, he replied: “Not at all. Why should I feel worried when I have done nothing wrong?”
Mr Bose failed to explain to the CBI why he took Rs 60 lakhs per month from Saradha Group chairman Sudipta Sen in a deal between Saradha and Sangbad Pratidin to run a Bengali news channel, Channel 10.
Mr Sen earlier claimed to the CBI that Mr Bose blackmailed him often. After the questionning, Mr Bose was arrested and was booked on “criminal conspiracy, misappropriation of funds and deriving undue financial benefits” charges.
A CBI officer described him as an “influential figure who played a key role in the larger conspiracy” and said that his name would be added in the supplementary chargesheet. After suspended Trinamul MP Kunal Ghosh, Mr Bose is the second parliamentarian of the party to be arrested.
