Migratory birds land in Nilgiris for winter sojourn
For bird watchers this period indicates the blessing of Nature as the season
Ooty: Winter in the Nilgiris may not be to the liking of even regular hill residents as the cold weather between dusk and dawn makes them shiver, but for bird-watchers it is a period indicating the blessing of Nature as the season that runs between November and early March brings quite a few migratory birds. This winter, too, the winged visitors have not failed to entertain them. Some of them have already arrived and bird-watchers are waiting for a few more species to arrive in the coming days.
When big-sized migratory birds fly over the skies and roam around the water bodies, they easily attract the attention of even the layman. But there are many varieties of tiny, winged migrants which often go unnoticed by the common man. These birds mostly arrive in the hills here for the winter sojourn.
Saying that the arrival of the Kashmir flycatcher, Verditer flycatcher, wagtails and warblers has indicated that the winter migratory mode has set in in the Nilgiris, Mr K.Vijay, executive committee member of the Nilgiris Wildife and Environment Association, a renowned name in bird-watching and avian photography here, said while the Nilgiris is home to around 250 species of native birds, a little over 40 migratory species visit the hills during winter.
