Man gets back lower jaw

Seychelles patient treated with distraction technique
Chennai: A 51-year-old man from Seychelles, who lost his lower jaw due to oral cancer, underwent a complete lower jaw reconstruction using the distraction technique.
Maxillofacial surgeon, Dr S.M. Balaji, director of Balaji Dental and Craniofacial Hospital, said oral cancer often leaves a huge defect that drastically affects the quality of life after cancer treatment.
“Mr Richibert, who had oral cancer of the floor of the mouth, was diagnosed at a late stage and lost the entire lower jaw,” said Dr Balaji, adding that the patient was referred by Seychelles’ health minister Mitcy Larue.
Speaking about the advanced distraction technique, Dr Balaji said a custom-made transverse distractor device was used and was fixed to the two bone segments of the lower jaw of the patient.
“The attached screw was gradually turned daily. In the next stage, we used transport distraction technique to advance the lower jaw bone at the rate of 1 mm per day. New bone was regenerated. When it matures, implants will be placed to replace the lost teeth. The patient will be returning to his native place in two weeks,” said the sur-
geon.
