Forcible land acquisition for Metro to continue

More than 95 per cent of the land acquisition has been completed

Kochi: As the delay in acquiring the remaining few plots is affecting the time-bound completion of the Metro Rail project, the district administration has decided to go ahead with forcible acquisition of plots.

The land owned by individuals who are unwilling to surrender their property and are not ready to negotiate with authorities on land value would be forcibly acquired, invoking provisions of the Emergency Clause of the Land Acquisition Act.

More than 95 per cent of the land acquisition has been completed and only 1.29 hectares of plots have to be taken over now.

On Thursday, revenue department authorities forcibly acquired 32 cents of land at MG Road near Madhava Pharmacy junction after the landowner turned down the repeated requests of authorities for negotiations. The land was priced at Rs 52 lakhs per cent of land and since the owner was not willing to accept the money, it would be furnished before the court.

“A final meeting with landowners has been scheduled and after it, forcible takeover will start after serving a 48-hour notice to owners,” said sources at revenue department.

In August, the district administration forcibly acquired 22 cents of land at Pathadippalam near Kalamassery from an owner who was unwilling to surrender the plot, after invoking provisions of the Emergency Clause of Land Acquisition Act.

The residents of the Vytilla-Pettah stretch are again on a protest path demanding completion of the land acquisition process that has been delayed for over two years and resumption of metro construction activities in the section.
“They have not even started the road widening process, the completion of which is essential for starting metro consruction activities. The landowners had conveyed their willingness to part with the land and even reached a settlement with the district authorities regarding the compensation amount nearly two years ago. However, nothing has happened since then,” said V P Chandran, Convener of the Vyttila-Pettah Road Prakshobha Samithi. The residents would lay siege to the Vytilla –Petah road at Chambakara on December 10 as part of the protest.
The Vyttila-Pettah road, currently with a width of 15 meters, is sought to be increased to 26 meters or more depending on the space available.
