Mayor hits out at DMK for scams
Rs 88.34 crore was incurred during Stalin’s period as mayor and Rs728 crore during Subramanian’s term
Chennai: Chennai mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy once again accused on Thursday during a corporation council meet, former city mayors M.K. Stalin and M. Subramanian (both from rival DMK) of causing a loss of Rs1016.79 crore due to the various scams during the DMK regime.Trouble erupted in the hall following which DMK councillors were evicted for misbehaving. Duraisamy also challenged Stalin to attend the council meetings and reply to the audit reports which were against the DMK representatives. The mayor then submitted the department wise loss incurred during the DMK regimes.
According to the report, a loss of Rs288.34 crore was incurred during Stalin’s period as mayor and Rs728 crore during Subramanian’s term. The department wise breakup for the loss was also submitted. “From minting money by repairing corporation vehicles at private service centres to showing fake documents of roads laid, the DMK government has done it all,” he added.
Addressing mediapersons after getting evicted from the hall, DMK floor leader S.C. Bose said that the mayor was trying to divert the council from the corporation’s poor monsoon preparedness. “Despite questioning the mayor on transferring joint commissioner Vijay Pingale soon after he pulled up errant contractors, the mayor did not respond but tried to deviate by blaming the DMK government,” Bose said.
Speaking to this newspaper, former mayor M. Subramanian said, “If mayor Duraisamy says that we have not taken action on any erring officials, why has he not done so? I am always ready to debate with him over his allegations. But he wants Mr Stalin to debate at a council meet where opposition party councilors are given no respect and are treated like rowdies.”
