Ragpickers sort out trash near Himayatnagar flats
Hyderabad: Himayatnagar an upscale area, which was earlier declared as a ‘garbage bin free zone’, similar to Malkajgiri, as part of the ‘Clean Hyderabad Drive’, is presently facing issues of ragpickers in GHMC uniforms.
They are collecting waste from local households and spreading it out next to apartment gates for sorting, complain residents.
On Wednesday at about 2:30 am, three men dumped a pile of garbage opposite Kaundiya Apartments, Street No. 5 (which is a garbage free zone) and beat up the guard who objected.
A complaint has been filed with the area police and the Deputy Commissioner of Circle 9, GHMC.
In Oct. 2011, the GHMC issued a circular that Himayatnagar would be made a ‘binless’ locality (letter dated Oct. 21, 2011, GHMC). The corporation purchased large plastic bins for local collection. But, till date, this initiative has not taken off.
Mr Sunil Bansal, secretary, Kaundinya Flat Owners Welfare Association said, “Bins in neighbouring Himayatnagar streets were removed, even Street 5 and 6 were benefited by this drive.
However, this incident has undone what was a result of many efforts and representations made since 2002 by various complexes in our locality.”
