Protests galore at Ernakulam Government Law College
KOCHI: It was a day of agitation for both SFI and KSU at the Ernakulam Government Law College. The former agitated for completing the work on the new ladies hostel and appointing matron, cook and watchman for the hostel.
Five KSU activists led by Law College unit president Nobal Kumar have been sitting on an indefinite hunger strike for the past five days to reopen the college canteen.
They threatened to go public with the agitation on Thursday by spreading a feast for the public on the road in front of the college.
The issue was solved with the congress MLA Hibi Eden promising to provide the money needed for the project from his Asset Development Fund following the intervention of the college principal Lovely Paulose.
The meeting with the MLA had also decided that a temporary canteen will start functioning at the college immediately. The canteen has not been functioning for the past several months, students said.
The SFI activists staged a march to the PWD office also demanded to improve the condition of the law college buildings and ladies toilet. They also wanted to complete the tendering process for kitchen furniture and other requirements at the ladies hostel.
“The PWD authorities said that work on the hostel will be completed in 15 days and promised to improve the condition of the buildings of the college and toilet,” said Hasna Shahida, an SFI leader at the college.
Later the activists were arrested by the police and removed. In protest against the arrest, the SFI resorted to a strike in the afternoon at the college.
