No increase in the age for retirement in Telangana

Government is under tremendous pressure from its employees over retirement age

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has ruled out increasing retirement age for government employees from 58 years to 60 years. Finance minister Etela Rajender announced this in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday during Question Hour.

The Telangana State government is under tremendous pressure from government employees for raising the retirement age to 60 years after Andhra Pradesh government did it in August. Mr Rajender said that if retirement age is increased, it would affect the prospects of fresh graduates and unemployed in securing government jobs.

“Every year, around 8,000 to 9,000 employees retire in various departments. We want to offer these jobs to fresh graduates and the unemployed. If retirement age is increased, the youth and unemployed will be affected,” he added.

Mr Rajender informed the House that as many as 4,15,931 employees are working at present in various departments in the state, which include regular, contract and outsourcing staff. He said the Centre is yet to complete the distribution of staff between Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh which has been delaying the process to take up fresh recruitment drives in the state.

“Once employee distribution is over, we would know the exact number of vacancies in each department. Based on that we will issue notifications through Telangana Public Service Commission,” he said.
