Won’t interfere in academic affairs, says HC

Hyderabad: Maintaining that academic regulations are meant to be followed, Justice C.V. Nagarjuna Reddy of Hyderabad High Court on Wednesday refused to grant relief to engineering students studying in affiliated colleges of Osmania University and Jawaharlal Technological University Hyderabad.
The students have not been allowed to write their semester examination scheduled in December on grounds of not having cleared their backlogs and also due to shortfall in attendance.
The judge was dealing with a batch of petitions by students, which appealed to declare the action of OU and JNTU illegal.
Authorities of both varsities have denied permissions to the students, who have more than 12 backlogs and those having less than 65 per cent attendance. The counsel representing the petitioners told the court that as many as 1,200 students have been denied permission.
The judge reminded that it is the duty of the parents to check whether their wards are regularly attending classes or not.
After noticing that most of the students did not even secure 30 per cent of marks, the judge said, “If the engineers, who are supposed to play a vital role in nation building, are not keen on pursuing their studies, then no sympathy can be shown towards them.”
The judge made it clear that the court has no right to interfere in academic regulations of the varsities and dismissed the petitions.
