Eight days of treat for percussion lovers

Vrischikolsavam at Poornathrayeesa temple begins
Kochi: The eight-day annual festival, Vrischikolsavam, at the Poornathrayeesa temple at the royal town of Tripunithura will begin on Thursday with traditional fervor. The season of temple festivals in the state begins with the Vrischikolsavam. Chief priest (thanthri) Puliyannoor Sasi Namboothiri will hoist the holy flag on Thursday marking the beginning of festival days.
For the natives of the royal town, Vrischikolsavam is an occasion to come back to their place to watch the splendour and elegance of Lord Poornathrayeesan.
Vrischikolsavam is an occasion for percussion lovers across the state to enjoy the performance of noted percussionists. Melam (percussion) will be performed on all festival days during the morning and night.
As many as 120 percussionists under the leadership of Peruvanam Kuttan Marar will perform melam. As usual, about 15 caparisoned elephants will parade in the ‘ezhunnelippu’ to be held during the festival days. The festival is also marked by the resonance of other traditional percussion such as ‘panchari melam’, ‘adantha’ and ‘chembada’ melam.
Meanwhile, police authorities have beefed up security near the temple premises to prevent untoward incidents. A control room has been set up near the eastern gate of the temple to monitor the crowd. Hidden cameras have also been set up in areas where crowds will congregate.
