Terror tag to haunt refugees
Hyderabad: With the arrest of Khaled Mohammed, Royal Colony and surrounding areas of Balapur, where several Burma refugees live, will never be the same again.
Intelligence agencies and police have strengthened their surveillance on this area that looks like a slum.
The refugees who fled sectarian violence in Burma, landed in Hyderabad in search of a livelihood. Majority of them are illiterates and live in miserable condition working as labourers.
The news of infiltration of terror groups into these camps will bring further misery to the community, activist .
All of the Rohingya refugees settled in Hafizbabanagar, Balapur and Kishanbagh areas of Old City are living with horrific memories of their kins, relatives and neighbours being brutally slaughtered by Buddhist extremists in their native place.
Several of them sneaked out of their houses and walked to Bangladesh and then to West Bengal border before reaching Hyderabad. Few were killed on the way in accidents, and by the Buddhist extremists, the refugees say.
After reaching Hyderabad, they faced with language problem and could not communicate with locals and hence struggled for job.
“Now, we daily wagers work at construction sites for maximum 10 days in a month. For rest of the month, we have to manage with the meager amount we have,” said 30-year-old Mohd Mansoor from Balapur.
Several residents are yet to get the refugee status from United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
